FDI Definition – A ‘Green Field Investment’

Foreign Direct Investment has different definitions relating to the type of investment that qualifies. For the FDI Awards we view this as being ‘greenfield’ where the investor is investing for a stake greater than 10% of a new or existing entity.

The term ‘green field investment’ refers to an FDI project where the investor/investee company builds the entirety of operations in the UK starting from the ground up, or a so-called green field. In addition to setting up new UK entities, raising or providing working capital, the construction of new office or manufacturing facilities, hiring UK staff, these projects can also include the building of local or regional customer service functions, supply chain/distribution hubs, new product development & innovation capabilities, sales operations and regional HQ facilities.

Qualifying companies include the investor itself, or any advisory or service provider facilitating the investment.
